IPR2 undertook a number of activities in June 2010 – including a training programme, two study tours, a conference, an international seminar, support to the EU-China IP dialogue framework as well as launching a new e-learning module – covering Trademark Law and IP-related aspects of Civil Procedure Law, trademark registration and judicial review, the Chinese trademark system, interface between Competition and IP Law, IP management for local information industry officials, IP-related issues on the protection of software, patent-related issues and developments in Europe and China, enforcement mechanisms in the European Union. | STUDY TOUR - EU-China study tour on Trademark Law and IP-related aspects of Civil Procedure Law, The Netherlands, France, Switzerland, 30 May-5 June 2010 |
| IPR2 supported a study tour of officials from the Legislative Affairs Commission (LAC) as part of preparations for revising China’s Trademark Law and Civil Procedure Law. It involved an interactive exchange between LAC and European officials and experts on the adjustment of the legal framework for trademark protection and civil procedure and contributed to the delegates understanding of the existing legal framework, mechanisms and best practices in the EU. |

| STUDY TOUR - EU-China study tour on trademark registration and judicial review; Spain and Germany; 5-12 June 2010 |
| With the support of IPR2, 6 officials from the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) went on a study tour to Spain, Luxembourg and Germany, to build knowledge on the European trademark system and support an exchange of expertise between Chinese and European officials and judges on emerging trademark registration and judicial review issues. The visit informed China’s decision makers and leaders on trademark registration and protection trends in Europe; and helped to build the technical capacity of all institutions involved handling trademark cases. Tin particular, the detailed exchanges served to review the latest trends in the different policy and production areas of SAIC and the Office for Harmonisation for the Internal Market (OHIM), Europe’s trademark and design office. |

| SEMINAR - EU-China roving seminars on the Chinese trademark system, Spain and Germany, 9 and 11 June 2010 |
| IPR2, together with the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM), the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) and China’s Trademark Office under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) held two one-day seminars in Madrid and Munich on China’s trademark system. The workshop helped to raise awareness among more than 100 European trademark holders and IP practitioners and provided the opportunity to hear directly from Chinese officials on trademark protection mechanisms. |

| CONFERENCE - EU-China conference on the interface between Competition and Intellectual Property Law, Dalian, 10-11 June 2010 |
| IPR2 together with the Supreme People’s Court (SPC), the Liaoning High People’s Court and the Dalian Intermediate People’s Court organised a conference and workshop on the interface between Competition and IP Law, involving more than 120 judges from the SPC, Chinese High Courts and Intermediary Courts in different jurisdictions, members of the Patent Re-examination Board, academia and companies. By sharing European best practice and experience on the development of its legislative framework in enforcing competition and IP laws, the conference helped to support the Chinese judiciary with their adjudication and judicial interpretation work. |

| SEMINAR - International Seminar on IP protection of software, Dalian, 23 June 2010 |
| IPR2 organised a seminar to further build mutual understanding of intellectual property protection in the software and service outsourcing industry, together with the China Association of Trade in Services (CATIS), under the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), in cooperation with the Copyright Protection Centre of China (CPCC) and the Dalian Copyright Protection Association. The event aimed to build understanding on the challenges and means of improving the international competitiveness of enterprises and the overall development of this industry. |

| DIALOGUE - EU-China IP Working Group 2010, Beijing, 24 June 2010 |
| The 6th meeting of the EU-China IP Working Group was held in support of the EU-China IP Dialogue and focused on patent-related issues and developments. The EU-China IP Dialogue, a structured political exchange between the European Union and China on IP, is reinforced by regular IP Working Group meetings, which enables industry and other right holders to participate in bilateral IP discussions. |

| TRAINING - EU-China training on IP management for local information industry officials, Qingdao, 24-25 June and Xiamen, 28-29 June 2010 |
| IPR2 continued its co-operation with the Ministry of Information Industry and Technology (MIIT) with the implementation of two training sessions on IP management for officials from local departments responsible for servicing industry, in particular small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as well as representatives of industry. More than 120 officials and companies were introduced to tools to help build a strategic IP management approach, relevant to their work in supporting SMEs’ capacity to understand how to legally use, valorise and protect IPRs and developing a sustainable IP environment. |

| PUBLICATION - IPR2 Roadmap for IP Protection series |
The IPR2 Roadmaps provide information on the IP systems in China and Europe and to give guidance to both European and Chinese companies in protecting their IP. All issues are available to download free-of-charge from www.ipr2.org/roadmap and are also provided on a compilation CD.

JULY 2010
EU-China study tour on implementation of Anti-Unfair Competition Law, UK, France, Germany, 4–14 July 2010
IPR2 is supporting a study tour of officials from the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) to help build knowledge on the European anti-unfair competition system and increase the exchange between Chinese and European officials and experts on the implementation of anti-unfair competition legislation. The delegates, from the anti-unfair competition departments of SAIC and local AICs, will meet with European government agencies and academic and private institutions, as well as engaging the Chinese officials with judges and legal practitioners.
EU-China training for IP protection at trade fairs, Guilin, Zhejiang, Beijing, 12-16 July 2010
IPR2, together with the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), entrusted by the Ministry of Commerce, will implement a training programme with Chinese companies and government officials on how to protect IP at trade fairs. European experts will present the leading IP protection measures in Europe, and explain how companies can prepare to make use of the system, supported by case studies from major exhibitions in Europe. In addition, the training will elaborate the role and scope of the recently introduced function of on-site mediation support for exhibitors.
EU-China workshop on revision of the Trademark Law, location to be confirmed, 21 to 23 July 2010
IPR2 is co-operating with the Legislative Affairs Commission (LAC) to organise a workshop on the revision of China’s Trademark Law, drawing on the expertise and experience of European academics, officials and practitioners working the field of trademark law, to address questions raised by the LAC officials responsible for drafting the new law, review and discuss its expected impact, and make suggestions relevant to the drafting work.

IPR2 at World Expo 2010 In Court - Protecting IPR at trade fairs: Analysis of European and Chinese enforcement proceedings in a moot court setting, Shanghai, 4 September 2010
IPR2 will be present at this year’s World Expo in Shanghai with activities dedicated to building awareness of the importance of IP protection and enforcement. Hosted in the EU Pavilion which has thematic displays representing ‘Intelligent Europe’, this includes an issue of international relevance – how to protect and enforce intellectual property rights at trade fairs. Adopting a ‘moot court’ setting to simulate proceedings for the same infringement case, experts from Europe and China will compare and contrast the European and Chinese enforcement systems.
